The UK High Court has ruled the government’s attempt to classify Palestine Action as a terrorist organization unlawful and disproportionate, dealing a significant blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration. Palestine Action had been placed alongside groups like ISIL and al-Qaeda, a move condemned by figures including the UN human rights chief and author Sally Rooney as conflating peaceful activism with violent extremism.
Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, welcomed the ruling as a victory, noting the ban had inadvertently boosted the group’s visibility and message. The decision highlights ongoing UK tensions between state security efforts and safeguarding lawful protest, particularly around arms production and international conflict issues.
With the ban lifted, Palestine Action can continue its activism without fear of criminalization, a move celebrated by civil liberties advocates.
