mBridge: China-led cross-border digital currency platform sees surge

LONDON, Jan 16: Transactions on the China-led digital currency platform mBridge have surged past $55 billion, highlighting growing momentum behind alternatives to dollar-dominated global payment systems, according to a new report.

Data analyzed by the Washington-based Atlantic Council shows that the prototype mBridge platform—currently being tested by central banks in China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia—has processed more than 4,000 cross-border transactions to date.

The cumulative transaction value of $55.5 billion marks an increase of nearly 2,500 times since the project’s early phase in 2022, with the digital yuan accounting for approximately 95% of the total volume.

Also known as the e-CNY, China’s digital currency remains the world’s largest live central bank digital currency (CBDC) experiment. Recent figures from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) show the e-CNY has handled over 3.4 billion transactions worth about 16.7 trillion yuan ($2.4 trillion)—an increase of more than 800% compared to 2023.

Chinese state media reported last month that the e-CNY will begin paying interest to users holding it in digital wallets this year, a move widely seen as an effort to boost adoption.

“These developments point to a gradual expansion of the yuan’s internationalization through digital infrastructure,” said Alisha Chhangani of the Atlantic Council. Rather than directly challenging the U.S. dollar, she noted, China and its partners are building parallel settlement systems that reduce reliance on dollar-based networks.

“Project mBridge is unlikely to dethrone the dollar outright, but it may incrementally erode its dominance,” she added.

The project is being closely watched by policymakers worldwide. Initially overseen by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the Switzerland-based institution exited the initiative in late 2024 and has since shifted focus to a separate CBDC project involving several major Western central banks.

Despite this, mBridge remains ahead. In November, the UAE Ministry of Finance and the Dubai Department of Finance completed the first government transaction using a wholesale digital dirham on the platform.

Going forward, analysts expect mBridge to increasingly target trade settlements, particularly in energy and commodity markets, where China already holds a significant global position.
