Cradle of civilisation at risk of erosion in Iraq due to climate change

by Saqlain Abbas

UR/BABYLON, Iraq (Oct 30, Reuters) – Iraqi officials have raised urgent concerns over the deteriorating state of the country’s ancient heritage sites, warning that thousands of years of history could vanish due to the effects of climate change.

The historic southern cities of Iraq — including Ur, believed to be the birthplace of the Biblical Prophet Abraham, and Babylon, once a thriving center of powerful empires — are facing severe erosion and soil salinity. Prolonged droughts and rising temperatures are accelerating the decay of these ancient monuments, threatening what is often described as the cradle of civilisation.

Authorities are now appealing for international assistance to help preserve these invaluable archaeological treasures before it’s too late
