The Pak Global Pakistan:
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the appointment of Riley Barnes as the new United States Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. This role, established by Congress in 2002, is tasked with advocating for Tibetan rights and cultural preservation. Barnes currently serves as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor.
Rubio released the announcement on Losar, the Tibetan New Year, highlighting the resilience of Tibetans worldwide and reaffirming the US commitment to supporting their linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage.
The appointment occurs amid a complex global human rights landscape, with the Trump administration taking a selective approach to international human rights advocacy while actively engaging in various geopolitical disputes.
China, which has governed Tibet since 1951, criticized previous similar appointments as interference in its internal affairs. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian reiterated Beijing’s opposition to foreign involvement in Tibet, calling such actions political manipulation.
Tibet remains a sensitive issue, with exiled Tibetan leaders accusing China of cultural suppression, while China defends its governance as ending feudal serfdom and promoting development.
In related news, the US government-funded Radio Free Asia has resumed broadcasting into China in Mandarin, Tibetan, and Uyghur languages, supported by congressional funding.
