The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has strongly demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the tragic fire incident at Gul Plaza, which resulted in significant loss of life and injuries.
KCCI President Rehan Hanif, in an official statement, stressed that a transparent and independent inquiry is essential to uncover the real causes of the disaster. He raised serious questions about the adequacy of fire safety arrangements within the building, including the availability and condition of emergency exits.
The KCCI president also questioned the preparedness and response capability of the fire brigade, asking whether firefighters were equipped with modern tools, protective gear, and sufficient resources to handle a fire of such magnitude.
Furthermore, the Chamber called for the immediate establishment of a special relief and compensation fund for the victims of the Gul Plaza fire. Rehan Hanif stated that such a fund would play a crucial role in supporting affected families and helping them recover from financial and personal losses.
According to official reports, firefighters struggled for over 33 hours to bring the blaze under control. The tragic incident has so far claimed 14 lives and left 30 people injured, including 11 in critical condition, while the fate of several individuals who were reportedly trapped inside the building remains unknown.
The KCCI emphasized that accountability and concrete safety reforms are vital to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
