The Pak Global Pakistan:
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that his government will not assist in repatriating Australian women and children currently held in Syria, believed to be relatives of suspected ISIL fighters.
In an ABC News interview, Albanese emphasized Canberra’s firm stance against repatriation in such cases, saying, “We have a very firm view that we won’t be providing assistance or repatriation.” While recognizing the difficult circumstances faced by children, he reiterated the government’s position with the phrase, “As my mother would say, you make your bed, you lie in it.”
Albanese expressed no sympathy for individuals who traveled abroad to support efforts to establish a caliphate, describing these actions as attempts to undermine Australia’s way of life.
A spokesperson for Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke reinforced this position, warning that any returnees who have committed crimes abroad will face the full force of Australian law.
The comments come after reports that 34 Australian women and children were released from the Kurdish-controlled Roj detention camp in northern Syria. The group, reportedly relatives of ISIL fighters, were handed over to family members who traveled from Australia to escort them home. However, Kurdish authorities later ordered them to return to the camp due to lack of permission to enter government-held Syrian territory.
The Roj camp officials confirmed the Australians were returned for “technical reasons,” and family representatives continue discussions with Syrian authorities to resolve the situation.
This development underscores ongoing international challenges regarding foreign nationals detained in Syrian camps linked to ISIL, with divided government approaches on repatriation versus regional custody. Here is the image you requested, sized 1170×658 pixels, depicting Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese speaking to the media with Australian flags in the background, reflecting the serious tone of the statement on repatriation.
