The Pak Global Pakistan:
Team GB achieved a historic milestone at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics as Matt Weston and Tabitha Stoecker secured gold in the mixed team skeleton event, marking the first time the nation has won two Winter Olympic titles in a single day. This victory followed earlier success by Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale in the snowboard cross mixed team event.
Weston, who had already claimed individual skeleton gold two days prior, delivered a flawless 58.59-second run, complemented by Stoecker’s impressive 1:00.77. Their combined time of 1:59.36 secured the top podium spot and solidified Weston’s status as the most decorated British Winter Olympian in history.
“It’s amazing to do this as a team, especially in a sport where we usually compete individually,” Weston said. “Having Tabby by my side as Olympic champions—two-time for me—is incredible. I’m excited for the celebrations!”
Another British pair, Marcus Wyatt and Freya Tarbit, narrowly missed a medal by just 0.01 seconds. The German teams of Christopher Grotheer and Jacqueline Pfeifer and Axel Jungk and Susanne Kreher took silver and bronze, respectively.
The mixed skeleton event, making its debut at these Games, demands rapid reaction times as athletes race down the icy track consecutively. Several competitors were penalized for early starts, providing a strategic edge to the British teams.
Weston’s meteoric rise in skeleton has been remarkable. From finishing 15th at the 2022 Beijing Games to dominating the Milan-Cortina track, he added two Olympic golds to his three consecutive overall World Cup titles, cementing his legacy. Former Olympic bronze medallist John Jackson praised his performance, saying, “Weston keeps raising the bar to new standards.”
Team GB’s double gold not only highlights individual excellence but also reaffirms Britain’s strong legacy in skeleton, signaling a bright future for the sport on the global stage.
