An 18-year-old man, Carter Camacho from Smyrna, Georgia, was arrested by Washington, DC police after running several hundred yards toward the US Capitol Building armed with a loaded combat-style shotgun and extra ammunition. Camacho was wearing a tactical vest and gloves at the time of the incident.

US Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said officers intercepted the suspect, ordered him to drop the weapon, and took him into custody without incident. No motive has been disclosed, and investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect intended to target Congress, which is currently not in session.

Authorities found Camacho’s Mercedes SUV near the US Botanic Garden, containing a gas mask and Kevlar helmet. Police noted that the vehicle was not registered to him, and he has multiple addresses. Camacho faces charges including unlawful activities, carrying a rifle without a license, and possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition.

The arrest occurred one week before President Donald Trump’s scheduled State of the Union address. Police confirmed that security preparations for the event remain unchanged, emphasizing the seriousness with which they approach the occasion.
