In Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, a Russian drone attack killed four people, including a 17-year-old boy, while a separate strike in the southeastern Zaporizhia region claimed the life of a 77-year-old man, Ukrainian authorities reported. Additional Russian attacks injured civilians and damaged infrastructure across several regions, including Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Kherson. The Donetsk region saw 18 attacks in one day, wounding four people and prompting the evacuation of over 500 residents from frontline areas.
Russian forces targeted a US-owned Mondelez facility in Sumy, prompting condemnation from Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who highlighted Russia’s assault on American business interests in Europe. In the eastern Donetsk region, Moscow’s forces reportedly took control of the village of Karpivka.
Ukraine responded with drone strikes in Russia’s Belgorod region and missile attacks on Russian facilities in Udmurtia and Samara. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the neutralization of Russian mercenaries planning assassinations of key Ukrainian figures.
Diplomatically, Zelenskyy held talks with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte focusing on upcoming negotiations with the US and Russia, as well as Ukraine’s energy challenges. The Ukrainian leader emphasized ongoing efforts to ensure EU involvement and strengthen regional support. Meanwhile, protests supporting Ukraine took place in major cities worldwide ahead of the invasion’s fourth anniversary.
Amid energy tensions, Slovakia and Hungary’s threats to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine over oil transit issues raised regional security concerns, drawing criticism from Kyiv and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Military aid continued with the Czech Republic providing reconnaissance drones to Ukrainian brigades, while former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson advocated for peaceful ground forces from the UK and EU to support Ukraine’s independence.
