Japan Condemns China’s Export Restrictions on Key Japanese Firms Amid Growing Diplomatic Tensions

The Pak Global Pakistan:

Japan has lodged a strong protest against China’s recent decision to restrict exports of “dual-use” items to 20 Japanese business entities. These items, which can serve both civilian and military purposes, have been targeted by Beijing as part of an escalating diplomatic dispute between the two nations.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Japan’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Sato Kei described China’s move as “deplorable” and made clear that Tokyo “would not tolerate” such restrictions. The affected companies include major Japanese industrial players such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ shipbuilding group, subsidiaries involved in aerospace and marine machinery, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Japan’s National Defense Academy, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

China’s Ministry of Commerce justified the export controls by citing the need to “safeguard national security and interests” and fulfill international non-proliferation obligations. Beijing accused the Japanese companies of contributing to the enhancement of Japan’s military capabilities.

In addition to the initial 20 entities, China announced that it would place another 20 companies on its export restrictions watchlist. Among these are Japanese automaker Subaru, petroleum firm ENEOS Corporation, and Mitsubishi Materials Corporation. Chinese exporters are now required to submit risk assessment reports to ensure that dual-use items are not utilized to bolster Japan’s military strength.

This action mirrors similar export restrictions China has imposed on the United States and Taiwan, reflecting Beijing’s political stance, especially regarding Taiwan, which it claims as its territory. Tokyo and Beijing’s historically tense relations worsened further in November after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned lawmakers that a Chinese attack on Taiwan would pose a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan and might compel military response.

The latest measures signal deepening diplomatic strains and underscore the complex geopolitical challenges in East Asia.
