Mexican Security Forces Kill Notorious Drug Lord “El Mencho,” Triggering Nationwide Violence

The Pak Global Pakistan — Mexican security forces have successfully killed Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The operation took place in Tapalpa, Jalisco, and involved a clash with soldiers, resulting in Oseguera’s death while being transported to Mexico City. The United States had placed a $15 million bounty on him.

Following the raid, a wave of violence erupted across multiple Mexican states, including Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Nayarit, Guanajuato, and Tamaulipas. Gunmen set vehicles on fire and blocked highways, prompting public safety measures such as suspended transportation and school closures. The city of Guadalajara, an upcoming FIFA World Cup host, experienced a near shutdown as civilians sought safety.

The Mexican Defense Secretariat confirmed the raid was supported by U.S. intelligence and resulted in several cartel members killed or arrested, with weapons seized. U.S. officials hailed the operation as a significant success in combating drug trafficking.

Oseguera, a former police officer turned drug lord, co-founded CJNG in 2007, which the FBI identifies as Mexico’s top trafficking organization, responsible for large quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl entering the U.S.

While hailed as a major victory, analysts warn the cartel’s fragmentation may provoke violent power struggles. Experts emphasize the need for continued, comprehensive efforts targeting cartel infrastructure and demand reduction to prevent further bloodshed.
