A joint investigation by Forensic Architecture and Earshot has uncovered harrowing details of a massacre of Palestinian aid workers in Gaza, revealing that Israeli soldiers fired over 900 rounds at a convoy of clearly marked Palestinian emergency vehicles before methodically killing surviving aid workers, some in “execution-style” shootings.
The massacre took place on March 23, 2025, in Tal as-Sultan, a neighborhood west of Rafah in southern Gaza. Fifteen aid workers, including paramedics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society, firefighters from Palestinian Civil Defence, and a United Nations agency staff member, were killed. Their bodies and vehicles were subsequently buried by Israeli forces.
Contrary to Israeli military claims of an uncoordinated incident or “professional error,” forensic analysis paints a different picture: a planned ambush with no return fire from the victims, aimed at eliminating all survivors. The investigation used advanced audio ballistics and “situated testimony” techniques to analyze gunfire sounds, confirming that Israeli forces fired continuously for over two hours from an elevated position about 40 meters away.
The final phase of the attack involved soldiers advancing towards the convoy, shooting survivors at very close range. Audio analysis and medical examinations confirmed the wounds were consistent with deliberate executions.
The Israeli military’s attempt to conceal the massacre involved bulldozing and burying the emergency vehicles and victims’ bodies at the scene, as verified by satellite imagery. Survivors were detained and subjected to torture, and evidence such as mobile phones was confiscated and hidden.
The report also identified three Israeli soldiers by name based on intercepted audio during the attack, highlighting the calculated nature of the operation.
This massacre is part of a broader pattern of violence in Gaza, where over 72,000 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli offensive began. International bodies like the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court are currently investigating allegations of genocide and war crimes against Israel.
Despite widespread condemnation, Israel continues to receive political support from Western allies, including the United States, while Palestinians and human rights groups call for justice and accountability.
