In Dhaka, Bangladesh, prime minister-in-waiting Tarique Rahman called for national unity following his party’s decisive victory in recent parliamentary elections. Rahman, speaking for the first time since the polls, dedicated the win to those who sacrificed for democracy and stressed that despite differing views, collective unity is essential for national strength.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won a commanding majority with 212 out of 299 seats. The Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance secured 77 seats, while the youth-driven National Citizen Party won only six of the 30 seats it contested, highlighting the difficulty of turning protest movements into electoral success.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus congratulated Rahman on the “landslide victory” and prepared for a smooth transition to an elected government. Rahman’s win marks a historic political shift and a strong mandate for the BNP after a period of unrest and protests in Bangladesh.
