Donald Trump’s decision to delay his planned March 31–April 2 trip to meet Xi Jinping highlights how the ongoing Iran conflict has disrupted his foreign policy agenda.

The move could also heighten tensions between Washington and Beijing, as the war in Iran adds to existing disputes over trade and Taiwan—further straining relations between the world’s two largest economies.

“The president looks forward to visiting China,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “However, the dates may be adjusted. As commander-in-chief, his top priority right now is ensuring the success of Operation Epic Fury. We will provide updates on the schedule as soon as possible.”

Tensions in the Middle East have sharply escalated since the United States and Israel launched a major offensive on Iran on February 28. The attacks have reportedly resulted in over 1,200 deaths, including Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
