Trump Labels Supreme Court Ruling on Tariffs a “Disgrace,” Vows to Continue Levies via Alternative Law

United States President Donald Trump has strongly condemned the Supreme Court’s recent 6-3 decision that invalidated his global tariffs, calling the court a “disgrace” and vowing to maintain tariffs through other legal means.

At a press conference on Friday, Trump accused the Supreme Court of being influenced by “foreign interests” and harshly criticized the justices involved. He described the liberal justices as “a disgrace to our nation” and the conservative justices who sided with them as “unpatriotic and disloyal” to the US Constitution.

Despite the setback, Trump remained defiant, asserting that he retains the authority to impose tariffs under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. This law, he claimed, gives him the legal grounds to continue his trade policies.

The Supreme Court’s ruling specifically struck down Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enforce tariffs without Congressional approval. The majority opinion, supported by three liberal and three conservative justices, emphasized that only Congress holds the constitutional power to impose tariffs during peacetime.

In response, Trump announced plans to invoke the Trade Expansion Act to implement a 10 percent global tariff for 150 days, effectively replacing some of the tariffs invalidated by the court. He also mentioned ongoing investigations into unfair trade practices that could justify expanding tariff measures further.

“We’re going straight ahead with 10 percent, straight across the board, which was the absolute right to do,” Trump said. “That’s a lot of money coming into our country.” He added that the investigations would help ensure tariffs are applied fairly or broadly across other nations.

The ruling marks a significant legal challenge to Trump’s trade agenda but the president’s commitment to continue imposing tariffs signals ongoing tensions in US trade policy.
