Syrian Army Takes Control of Key Northeastern Base Following US Withdrawal

The Pak Global Pakistan:

The Syrian Arab Army has taken control of a strategic military base in northeastern Syria following the withdrawal of United States troops, the Syrian Ministry of Defence announced on Sunday. This move is part of a ceasefire agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“Syrian Arab Army forces have taken over the al-Shaddadi military base in Hasakah countryside following coordination with the American side,” the ministry stated.

The base had been operated by the US since 2016, after the SDF captured it from ISIL (ISIS) amid the ongoing Syrian conflict. The US military partnered with Kurdish forces in combating the extremist group and maintained a presence to support security operations.

Following the toppling of President Bashar al-Assad in 2024, Washington has backed interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in consolidating control over Syria. The recent ceasefire agreement, brokered by the US in January, integrates Kurdish-led forces into the Syrian army after disputes over their role escalated into armed clashes.

As part of the deal, the Syrian army also assumed control of the al-Tanf base near the Iraq and Jordan borders last Thursday. Analysts view this redeployment as a major shift in US military posture in Syria, bolstering the Syrian government’s control over key northeastern territories.

The SDF has expressed cautious support for the agreement, highlighting its goal to prevent further escalation and maintain stability in previously contested areas.

These developments highlight the ongoing realignment of power in Syria as international forces adjust their presence and influence in the region.
